Ponte Comm has been the Preferred Cabling Partner for the National Blood Service (NBS) since 1992, when we started the adds, moves and changes contract.

Listed buildings GSK: North Mymms & Berkeley Square

North Mymms & Berkeley Square are both listed buildings owned by GSK which present their own unique difficulties in terms of a new cabling system. We worked closely with building and estate managers to ensure works were completed within specified guidelines and with minimum disruption.

Infrastructure Health Check

When Barkers HR Advertising first contacted Ponte Comm, it’s fair to say their data cabling system needed some attention.  We completed an ‘Infrastructure Health Check’ inspection and report on the whole system from top (8th floor) to bottom (Basement).

Airports

Robin Hood Airport

Isle of Man Airport

Baldonnell Airport, Dublin

Robin Hood Airport

Robin Hood Airport, the UK’s newest purpose built international Airport, commenced commercial operation on 28 April 2005.  On the site of a former Royal Air Force base sits a brand new terminal, and one of the UK's longest runways.

The customer required fibre optic works to be completed onsite, and Ponte Comm provided the specialist engineering team to carry out the project.

Our brief was to supply, terminate and test external multimode fibre optic cable routes at the Airport.  A team of our specialist fibre optic engineers completed the works, terminating all cores of the fibres using the fusion splicing method and SC-type connectors.  All cores were fully tested for functionality and dB loss using an OTDR fibre optic tester.

The project was successfully completed on time and to budget.

Isle of Man Airport

Ponte Comm has provided specialist fibre optic services to the Isle of Man Airport at Ballasalla since 2003.

This has included all fibre optic cabling relating to the taxiway expansion project, which included the relocation of the existing taxiway.  Strict Health and Safety precautions had to be employed to ensure engineers were not exposed to danger from the aircraft movements around the live site.

Working in phases to co-ordinate with other services, we completed the termination of 352 x ST ends of armoured singlemode fibre links across the runway.  All ends were OTDR tested at 1310mm and 1550mm in both directions.

Other works completed include decommissioning the existing fibre optic cabling within the Old Control Tower, and installing a new fibre optic system into the New Control Tower.

All works have been very successful and we are looking forward to continuing our relationship with the Airport.

Baldonnell Airport, Dublin

Located on the southwest of Dublin, the Baldonnell Aerodrome project encompasses a 7,700m2 aircraft hangar and 4,000m2 of ancillary office space.  Baldonnell Aerodrome was commissioned by the Department of Defence for use by the Irish Air Corps, and other government purposes.

Ponte Comm was commissioned to supply, terminate and test 5km of multimode fibre optic cable at the Aerodrome.   Due to the route between locations the cable had to have an outer sheath capable of being direct buried, and was supplied complete with a steel wire armoured outer sheath.

The project was very successful, with our customer particularly pleased with our advice and recommendations regarding the specialist cable.

Fibre Inter-Building Link- Canon UK

Cannon (UK) Limited leased a second prestigious new office building adjacent to their existing premises in Stockley Park, Uxbridge. In order to obtain trouble free communication between the two offices they required fibre optic and voice links to be installed.

Ponte Comm was commissioned to complete these works.

Our pre-project surveys revealed two potential cable routes between the buildings. With Ponte Comm’s advice the customer was able to choose which route would best suit their needs: minimising disturbance during the installation and offering the best all round solution.

The cables were routed through 450m of the external pit and duct system, which presented a harsh installation environment. Armoured cabling was chosen to give long-term protection to the system. We terminated the cable using SC connectors and it was fully tested using an OTDR.

We completed a full method statement and risk assessment prior to works commencing. The duct had to be pumped dry and our engineers utilised tripods, hoists and gas detectors to ensure strict Health and Safety measures were adhered to.

It was important to consider that other occupants of the buildings may be inconvenienced by the installation of these links. Ponte Comm established and maintained contact throughout the project to ensure that any inconvenience was kept to the absolute minimum.

The project was successfully delivered to the customer on time and within budget, and with the minimum of disturbance to both Canon and their neighbours.

Uxbridge College: Campus-wide Fibre Backbone

As an ongoing programme of improvement, Uxbridge College planned the upgrade of its existing campus-wide backbone fibre optic and voice cabling systems.

Minimising disruption to staff and students was a high priority, and Ponte Comm worked closely with the College when producing the timescale and schedule for the project.  Works were scheduled for the summer break, with strict deadlines to ensure everything was finished before the start of term.

Our engineering team worked hard to pull in through connecting ducts, terminate and 100% test the optical fibre and voice cables within the allotted time.

Uxbridge College were very impressed with the high quality of our work and the ‘can-do' attitude of our staff.  This led them to use Ponte Comm for further data cabling works.

We are now an established partner of the College, and have successfully completed several projects including the upgrade of the main Comms Room and data infrastructure works on both their Uxbridge and Hayes campus.

Site-wide Fibre Optic Upgrade, Chemical Manufacturing Plant

A leading pharmaceutical has a vast manufacturing site situated in Montrose on the North Sea coast of Scotland.  Ponte Comm was commissioned to complete a full optical fibre upgrade of the site, consisting of:

  • Removal of existing fibre optic cable backbone
  • Installation of 61 x 24 core ADC Krone singlemode fibre links, totalling 18km of fibre
  • Installation of 126 x 24 core ADC Krone patch panels
  • Termination & testing of 2,928 singlemode fibre ends
  • Installation of 36 x Cabinets

Completion of pre-project site surveys enabled our team a clear understanding of the site location, buildings, conditions and site boundaries.  This was essential as the site was highly challenging on several levels:

  • The 1930’s chemical plant provided a hazardous working environment,
  • The degree of difficulty that the buildings posed,
  • The extremely strict Health & Safety regime due to the chemicals present and risk of explosion,
  • Not least the coastal location (North Sea) and the extreme weather conditions.
  • The install took 3 months starting January 2007 and finishing March 2007

Given the size of the project area, an appreciation of the routes through the site together with any traffic restrictions was identified.   The customer was able to provide adequate notice on site hazards and the necessary precautions to be observed which enabled Ponte Comm to implement its H&S policy.

The work was carefully planned to fit with shut down periods for individual buildings as requested by the end customer to minimise manufacturing downtime.

The fibre optic cables were tested were fully OTDR tested on all cores, in both directions at the frequencies of 1310mm and 1550mm to determine link loss with all results submitted in the O&M manual and on disk.

  • A very successful project, delivered on time and to budget.
  • £40k of extra work also completed within the strict original deadline.

Ponte Comm was highly commended by the customer due to our ability as a team to always be flexible and accommodating and still be able to adhere to deadlines.
