We regularly get asked to undertake re-patching, cabling and replacement work in high profile computer rooms. All such work involves working round highly sensitive, critical services. Work is completed out of hours in line with client instructions. All cables are identified with source and destination information and patching records are updated on shared drives. Customers have a comprehensive record of all interconnections from switch to server which we are responsible for updating. A typical example would be our work recently with GSK to provide the latest generation of high availability network services for their R&D sites. The Network Core switches in the Computer Room were to be replaced. Work involved working round the clock over two days. Servers were taken down, 600 patch cables were disconnected and removed, switches were replaced, new patch cables were installed, and connections were re-patched as per patching schedule and servers brought back on line. Work started 6.00 am Saturday morning, with all servers back on line by 6pm Sunday evening. Work was completed under GSK change control with a back out plan in place. We were involved from planning stage to implementation stage. We achieved a 100% success rate for bringing all servers back on line. |
